CHRISTIAN SEASONS

Click on the season below for the Dates and Days of the season along with the Scripture readings for each

Lent

Begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts until Easter Sunday. Lent is a reminder of the forty days when Jesus fasted

Holy Week

The week that comes before Easter. Since this was the last week of Jesus' life on earth, it is a very solemn and holy period.

Easter

Marks the anniversary of the resurrection, or the day on which Christ rose from the grave.

Pentecost

Faithful Jews from across the world had gathered for Pentecost (The Feast of Weeks), a time of thanksgiving for the harvest. While they were together, what we know today as "Pentecost" occurred. As the Spirit came upon the disciples of Jesus, those who had gathered for the feast heard the good news of Jesus Christ proclaimed in their own language. These people, as well as later converts, were invited to be people of the Spirit, to become aware of the gifts of the Spirit, to recognize that God gave them abilities and skills to use in service.

Advent

The season of the Coming of Christ. Advent starts with the Sunday closest to St. Andrews Day {November 30} and lasts 4 weeks, until Christmas.

Epiphany

Comes on January 6, the twelfth day after Christmas and marks the end of the Christmas season.

Epiphany is observed by Christians in memory of three things:

  • the baptism of Jesus as told in the first chapter of the gospel of Mark in the New Testement
  • the visit of the Magi, or Wise Men, who recognized Jesus as King of all people
  • the miracle that Jesus performed at the marriage feast at Cana
